Aizawl: Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department officials seized 3 kilos and 310 grams of heroin from two places near Aizawl and arrested 4 persons, all of them non-tribals from neighbouring Assam, department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga said.
Zohmingthanga said that 2 kilos of heroin was seized at Seling, about 45 kilometres east of Aizawl by the officials on late Monday night.
He said that Bokul Uddin (23) and Sabil Ali (24), both residing in Masly Banga Bazar, Karimganj District, Assam were arrested in this connection along with a Mahindra Bolero pickup, bearing Assam registration number, reportedly used for transportation of the contraband.
On Friday, the Excise and Narcotics officials seized 1 kilo and 310 grams of heroin at Tuirial locality in Aizawl and arrested 2 persons for alleged possession and trafficking of the drugs, he said.
He said that Ali Hussain Laskar (40) resident of Saidpur, Mukam, Silchar, Assam and Sebul Haque Barbhuiya (28) of Ranghirgai, Amjurghat, Cachar District in Assam were arrested while a TATA 3118C truck bearing Mizoram registration was also detained for being used in trafficking the drugs.
The seized heroin consignments were smuggled from Myanmar to be sold outside Mizoram, he added.
The four accused persons were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and produced before a district court in Aizawl.
Law enforcement officials, belonging to both the state and central agencies, attributed the surge in drug trafficking from Myanmar to the military coup in early 2021 resulting in the absence of efficient administration in the neighbouring country, especially in the Chin state adjoining Mizoram.
The officials also expressed opinion that the current crisis in Manipur added to the upsurge as most of those planned to be trafficked to the neighbouring state were routed through Mizoram.
