Body of 14-year-old Myanmarese refugee sent home

Aizawl: Central committee of Young Mizo Association (YMA), apex Mizo body, accorded Mizo traditional farewell to a 14-year-old Myanmar refugee on Wednesday night at the YMA office in Aizawl.

Van Dawt Lian Sang of Hriphi village in Thantlang district of Myanmar’s Chin State was treated for some time for brain tumour at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong.

On the advice of the doctors, at the NEIGRIHMS, Sanga was brought to Mizoram and died on the morning of Wednesday while travelling at the outskirts of Silchar, the district headquarters of Assam’s Cachar district.

His body reached Aizawl the same day and was lying in state for a few hours before being sent to Myanmar at the full expense of the YMA while the civil society also gave Rs 10,000 to the kin of the deceased as per Mizo traditional ex-gratia    

Sang’s coffin was donated by the YMA unit of Mission Veng neighbourhood in Aizawl while a number of YMA units gave ‘puan’ or traditional shawl as a token of farewell.
