Body of 72-year-old man exhumed after foul play suspected

Aizawl: Mizoram Police officials on Monday exhumed the body of a 72-year-old man who died on the night of August 21 at Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP) building in Aizawl’s Lawipui neighbourhood after a foul play was suspected in his death.

Police officials said that exhumation of Sailomawia was vital for the investigation of his death and the permission of a magistrate was obtained on Friday last.

Doctors conducted post mortem examination in the cemetery before the dead body was buried again. The investigators would continue investigations based on the autopsy report, the officials said.

Sailomawia died at around 11.30 PM on August 21 and was accorded a normal funeral as there was no suspect of foul play till the time of burial. However, neighbours began to suspect foul play after overhearing heated argument between the deceased’s daughter Lalrengpuii and his grandson Benjamin.

After people suspected that Sailomawia’s death was not a natural one but a homicide, Police began investigations and arrested Lalrengpuii and Benjamin and they were remanded to judicial custody at the Central Jail on Wednesday last,.

The two accused reportedly told their interrogators that Lalrengpuii lived with her father while Benjamin is from Muallungthu village, about 19 kilometres south of Aizawl and used to visit them from time to time.

Lalrengpuii urged Benjamin to murder his grandfather as the old man always scolded her, they allegedly told the interrogators, adding that he murdered Sailomawia while the latter was sleeping.

Lalrengpuii is a known alcoholic while Benjamin is also said to be a drug addict, Police said.
