Father-son duo convicted in drug case

Aizawl: In an extremely rare case, a 78-year-old man and his 40-year-old son were convicted by Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai district Special Court (ND and PS Act) in narcotics case and sentence them to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh each.

In default payment, they will have to undergo 6 months jail term.

Special Judge Liansangzuala convicted Lalbeiseia and his son Lalnuntluanga, residents of Champhai vengsang neighbourhood under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

The father and son were arrested on July 13 last year by the Police in Champhai for possession and trafficking of around 270 grams of heroin which was found concealed in their car.

They were later released on bail during which Lalnuntluanga was arrested again for possession of drugs.

The judge, while pronouncing the sentence, said that they were awarded minimum punishment under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 for being an old age and having serious comorbidities.

They were remanded to judicial custody and sent to the district jail, Champhai after the sentencing.
