Aizawl: Ten Kuki-Zo legislators of Manipur will not attend the coming session of the Manipur state assembly, scheduled to commence from Monday (August 22), one of the legislators Poulienlal Haokip said on Friday.

Haokip told Zoram Chronicle that the 10 Kuki-Zo legislators, including 7 BJP MLAs, will not attend the session in a mark of protest against criminal attacks against the Kuki-Zo community in a state sponsored pogrom targeting the minority tribal community by the majority Meitei community.

He said that they cannot attend the session of the Manipur legislature also due to security reasons as Imphal city and the Imphal valley have become ‘valley of death’ not only for the Kuki-Zo community, but also for all the ethnic Mizo people, whether they are from Manipur or Mizoram or anywhere else.

The tribal legislators said that they are firm on their demand for separate administration from the Manipur state government as there has already been a clear geographic and demographic division between the majority Meitei community and the Kuki-Zo tribal community.

“No member of Kuki-Zo community is in the Imphal valley and no member of Meitei community is in the hill areas,” the MLAs said.

The 10 legislators, in a letter sent to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, asked for immediate political dialogue for political and administrative recognition of the ‘ethnic separation that has been forced upon us by the majority community-dominated government of Manipur, which, we feel, will bring lasting peace’.

The legislators are – Haokholet Kipgen (Independent MLA, Saitu ); Kimneo Haokip Hangshing (KPA MLA, Saikul ); L M Khaute (BJP MLA, Churachandpur); Chinlungthang (KPA MLA, Singngat); Nemcha Kipgen (BJP MLA, Kangpokpi); Ngursanglur Sanate (BJP MLA, Tipaimukh); Letpao Haokip (BJP MLA, Tengnoupal); Letzamang Haokip (BJP MLA, Henglep); Paolienlal Haokip (BJP MLA, Saikot) and Vungjagin Valte (BJP MLA, Thanton).
