Mizoram Crackdown on Drug Trades

35.15 kgs of heroin seized in last 6 months

Recent seizure of heroin by Mizoram Excise & Narcotics Department

Aizawl: An impressive amount of narcotics has been confiscated in Mizoram in the past six months.

Over this period, law enforcement personnel have successfully seized 35 kilograms and 15 grams of heroin, as well as 48 kilograms and 21 grams of Methamphetamine.

These numbers reflect a concerning surge in heroin seizures, which can be attributed to the military coup in Myanmar that took place in February 2021.

GP (Law and Order) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte provided further insight into the drug seizure trends.

In 2019, the Mizoram Police seized 10 kilograms and 597 grams of heroin, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the sealing of the Mizoram-Myanmar border in 2020, the amount dropped to 8 kilograms and 783 grams. However, in 2021, the quantity rose again to 15 kilograms and 792 grams, and last year witnessed a substantial increase to 49 kilograms and 367 grams.

As for Methamphetamine seizures, the situation followed a similar pattern. In 2019, 27 kilograms and 193 grams were confiscated, but in 2020, during the pandemic, the amount escalated significantly to 548 kilograms and 718 grams. Subsequently, in 2021, it decreased to 153 kilograms and 778 grams. However, there was a resurgence last year, with a total of 217 kilograms and 295 grams seized.

The statistics for drug-related cases and arrests further demonstrate the police’s dedication to combating drug trafficking. From January 1 to the end of June, 89 cases related to heroin were registered, along with 8 cases regarding the seizure of Methamphetamine. During this period, 123 Indian citizens and 18 Myanmar nationals were apprehended for their involvement in heroin trafficking.

In addition, the state Police recorded eight cases of Methamphetamine trafficking between January and June, resulting in the arrest of 14 Indian nationals and 1 Myanmar national for their roles in this illicit activity.
