Mizoram women commission registers suo moto cases on maid abuse in UAE

Aizawl: Mizoram State Commission for Women (MSCW) has taken cognisance and registered suo moto cases on the reported maltreatment meted out to Mizo women housemaids working in the United Arab Emirates as well as live sex video that has gone viral on social media.

The MSCW chairman Lalawmchhungi said that the state Director General of Police (DGP) Anil Shukla to have the two cases investigated so that the perpetrators of the criminal acts are booked and punished under the law.

Taking cognisance of the posts in social media by members of the Mizo Welfare Association in the UAE that a number of Mizo women seeking employment the country as housemaids are having serious problems due to the private placement agencies/foreign recruitment agents in Mizoram not being approved by the Protector of Emigrants under the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs.

Some of the cases in the UAE and other Gulf countries become human trafficking cases, the Mizo welfare leaders said, adding that they are tracking down 11 Mizo girls as on today.

The MSCW tasked the DGP of the state Police, Director of state Women and Child Development and others to take up the matter and submit their progress report to the commission within 30 days.

It also asked the DGP and other parties to investigate sex videos which have gone viral through the social media and book the culprits under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
