Aizawl: A 38-year old Myanmar refugee, who was convicted for murdering a Myanmar national on Wednesday, was sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 by Additional District and Sessions Judge of Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai on Thursday.
The judge, Sylvie L. Ralte convicted Hrangthanchea, a Myanmar refugee, now residing in Khawbung village in Champhai district for murdering Ngokhandova, a peddler on August 13, 2022.
Hrangthanchea will have to undergo additional 2 months in default of payment of the fine.
Ralte also sentenced him to another 3 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 for hiding the man he murdered to conceal evidences of the gory crime he committed.
The convicted person purchased a portable chainsaw at the rate of Rs. 35,000 Indian rupee from Ngokhandova, a resident of Langzang village in Chin state of Myanmar in 2022.
He paid Ngokhandova Rs. 20,000 on the spot and agreed to pay the rest of the amount afterwards.
When Ngokhandova visited Hrangthanchea in his house at Khawbung village on August 13, 2022, the latter without any provocation pounded the former repeatedly till he died while pinning him down on the floor with his leg.
He threw out the dead body through the window and latter hidden it in a drain down below.
However, fearing that there was an eye witness to the terrible crime he committed, he surrendered himself to the village leaders of Khawbung, who in turn notified the Police officials at Dungtlang Police Station who made the arrest on the same day.
