Aizawl: Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department and Police department officials seized a whopping 95 kilos and 683 grams of heroin during the last 7 months (January-July) this year, officials said on Wednesday.

The officials said that the state Excise and Narcotics department seized 52 kilos and 854 grams of heroin while the state Police officials seized 42 kilos and 829 grams of heroin during the period.

The state Police also seized 68 kilos and 21 grams of Methamphetamine during the same period.

Police arrested 170 people in connection with the heroin seizure and 17 people in connection with the Methamphetamine seizure.

Though Mizoram, sharing 404-km long porous international border with Myanmar and the neighbouring country’s close proximity with the infamous Golden Triangle, remains one of the main routes for drug trafficking for years, the recent upsurge in drug smuggling is attributed by the officials to 2021 military coup in Myanmar.

The officials also said that the current crisis in Manipur also must have contributed to the spike in the drug trafficking in Mizoram.

“As the Manipur-Myanmar border was sealed due to the ongoing violence in the neighbouring state, the drugs meant for passing through Manipur have been diverted to Mizoram since the ethnic strife which began on May 3,” one official opined.

Though larger quantity of trafficked drugs passed through the state and transported outside the state, the state witnessed increase in fresh drug addiction among school-going children while 47 people died in Mizoram due to drug abuse, the official said that a high majority of them died due to heroin abuse.
