NH connecting Aizawl remains blocked by landslide

Aizawl: Massive perpetual landslides along the National Highway no. 54 at Hunthar neighborhood in western part of Aizawl have caused serious problems for those who want to go to the lone Lengpui airport or returning from the airport for days.

At least 16 families living above the NH 54 have been evacuated from their homes along with their belongings.

Officials said that 11 families have already been evacuated on June 16 while 5 more families were evacuated on Tuesday.

Those evacuated mostly joined their relatives while some of them were lodged at the vacant Sub-Mission on Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) buildings at nearby Rangvamual locality.

Even workers using excavators failed to clear the road due to incessant heavy monsoon downpours and the district Traffic officials were forced to arrange alternate routes for people going to Lengpui airport or Mizoram University campus.

A large number of heavy trucks coming from Assam as well as those preparing to go to Assam were stranded for a number of days.

Buildings and buildings being constructed above the highway were in danger of being pulled down by the massive landslide which continued till Wednesday and the short cut road for Mizoram University and surrounding places, situated above the NH is also closed due to cracks appearing in the road.
