OIL, Mizoram University seek research, technological collaboration

Aizawl: Oil India Limited (OIL) and Mizoram University (MZU) have officially inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, solidifying their commitment to mutual research and technological advancements. 

This monumental collaboration represents a proud moment for Mizoram University, as it forges a strategic partnership with one of India’s leading Oil and Gas industry giants, a communique from MZU said.

The MoU signing ceremony, held on September 1, 2023, was inaugurated by Risabh Kumar Singh, senior geologist of OIL, who outlined the agenda for the collaboration. Khagen Chandra Kalita, head of the department of Community Engagement and Social Sustainability (CoESS) at OIL, extended a warm welcome to the attendees.

From the academic side, Dr Jimmy Lalnunmawia, head of the Department of Geology and the Centre for Petroleum Exploration at MZU, addressed the gathering. Prof B P Mishra, dean of the School of Earth Sciences and Natural Resource Management at MZU, graced the ceremony with his invaluable insights.

Speaking about the significance of this collaboration, Prof. Lalnundanga, the Honorable Registrar of MZU, and Prof. Pravakar Rath (Ex-Acting Vice-Chancellor) highlighted the numerous benefits that this MoU would bring to the university and its students.

Following the speeches, the MoU was formally signed, marking a significant step forward in strengthening the ties between OIL and MZU. Mr. Nilmani Deka, Deputy General Manager (Geology) at OIL, expressed his gratitude through a vote of thanks.

Dr. Susheel Kumar, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Petroleum Exploration at MZU, provided insights into the ongoing research activities under the Center for Petroleum Exploration at Mizoram University. Currently, the Department of Geology and the Centre for Petroleum Exploration offer programs in M.Sc. Geology, M.Sc. in Petroleum Geosciences, and Ph.D. programs.

This collaboration is expected to yield substantial advantages for both faculties and students of Geology and Petroleum Exploration, allowing them to explore industrial, petrophysical, and geochemical techniques related to the hydrocarbon industry. Furthermore, this partnership will enable students to undertake various internships, enhancing their personal and professional growth.

The signing of this MoU represented a significant stride towards fostering academia-industry collaboration in the future, opening doors to innovative research and technological advancements in the field of geology and petroleum exploration.
