‘Ousted’ from MNF, Dr K Beichua to join BJP

Aizawl: Former Mizoram Minister for Excise and Narcotics Dr. K. Beichhua, who had resigned as minister last year, said that he will join the BJP soon.

If Beichhua joins the BJP, the saffron party will be having two legislators in the 40-member Mizoram state legislative assembly.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday evening in south Mizoram’s Siaha town, the retired surgeon said that he would formally join the BJP after announcement of the date of the state assembly polls.
“Before that I will continue to be independent legislator supporting the BJP in the state legislature,” he said.
Election Commission of India is likely to announce general elections to the Mizoram Assembly by late September or early October.
He said that he will win the coming state assembly polls in BJP ticket from Siaha constituency from where he won the election as official candidate of the Mizo National Front (MNF) in 2018.
Beichhua submitted his resignation as Minister of State to Chief Minister Zoramthanga on December 13, 2022, a day after the latter asked him to resign. His resignation was accepted by the state governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on December 14, 2022.
The ruling MNF expelled him as primary member of the party on January 25 along with chairman of the Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) N. Viakhu for ‘anti-party activities’.
Beichhua was accused of being instrumental in toppling the MNF-Congress coalition government in MADC and installing the BJP government by instigating defection of some MNF members of district council (MDCs) to the fold of the saffron party.
Recent elections to the village councils within the MADC area indicated that the BJP has gained ground in Siaha district which has two assembly seats.
The BJP already has Dr. B.D. Chakma who won from Tuichawng assembly constituency in adjoining Lawngtlai district in 2018 assembly polls.
This was the first time the saffron party opened its account in Mizoram legislature.
