Aizawl: In a disturbing revelation, sexual assault has been discovered to be the motive behind the murder of an 11-year-old boy in Mamit town in western Mizoram, police said on Tuesday.

Lalremruata, a deaf-mute boy, was found dead on August 23 in an isolated location, with his naked body partly covered with leaves, five days after he had gone missing.

One of the two suspects detained by Mamit police, 20-year-old Lalrinchhana confessed to murdering the boy in a fit of unrelated anger.

Initially, police ruled out any indications of sexual molestation. The accused had also told police that he angered by something else  directed his emotions towards the young victim, ultimately ending his life by strangulation using a cloth.

However, while in police custody, he changed his statement and said that he sexually molested the child, police said in a statement on Tuesday.

On the fateful night of the incident, the accused shared a sleeping space with the boy in an automobile workshop. Afterwards, Lalrinchhana concealed the lifeless body amidst foliage and deliberately removed the victim’s clothing to hinder identification, authorities disclosed, he had told police.

As the recovery of the dead body raised suspicion of foul play, Mamit police summoned forensic experts and post mortem examination was also conducted, police said.
